Putou Shan mount of f Avalokitesvara Guan Yin

Mount Putuo or Putuo Shan (普陀山) is a name of the island located to the south-east of Shanghai, in Zhoushan prefecture of Zhejiang province. The island is around 250km to the south of Shanghai across the Hangzhou Bay.

Putou San is one of China's four Buddhist Sacred Mountains has a long history in 916 A.D. it began toenshrine Guanyin (Avalokitesvara), and in1214,it was designated to perfom Buddhist rites especially enshrining Guanyin.The main scenic spots are three large temples named PujiFayu and HuijiPurple Bamboo Forost Da Cheng Monastry Guanyins Footstep and mount Luojia. There are Over 50O monks and nuns In the mountain.and pilgrims over one million evey year.

Putuo Shan is a small island about 4 miles long and 3 miles wide, one of more than 100 in the Chusan archipelago, usually reached by a combination of bus and fast ferry from the mainland port of Ningbo. It's a summertime weekend holiday resort for urbanites from Shanghai trying to escape the heat, who fly into Zhou Shan airport on the neighboring island of Zhujiajian and take boats from there. Summer periods, as well as weekends for most of the year, should be avoided because hotel prices are extortionate then, as are prices in restaurants.

Transportation options:

Putuoshan to Shanghai: From the Luchaogang Harbour there is a fast boat to Shanghai Shiliepu Harbour near the Bund, the main passenger harbour of Shanghai. It costs RMB156 per person for a soft seat on the boat(bus fare included) and the trip takes three and a half hours.
